How the moving average is calculated

SMA = Sum of the latest N prices ÷ N
EMA = α × Current price + (1 − α) × Previous EMA
α = 2 ÷ (N + 1)

SMA gives each price in a complete rolling window equal weight. EMA starts from the first entered price, applies the stated smoothing factor, and treats the first N minus 1 values as warm-up.

EMA seed conventions can differ across software and available history. This page discloses its seed and does not claim exact parity with every MetaTrader indicator buffer.

Worked example from the audited fixture

Reproduce it with “Load audited example”With method SMA, period 3 and entered prices 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the latest complete window is 3, 4 and 5. Its average is 4, so the latest price is 1 above the average, or 25% of the average.

How to interpret the result

The calculation describes the latest entered three-price window. A price above its average is not classified as bullish, trending or a buy signal. Choosing EMA instead would apply the disclosed first-price seed and produce a different path.

Assumptions and limits

  • All observations must use one symbol, timeframe, broker feed and applied-price basis.
  • Labels are descriptive; the page does not parse dates, sort rows or repair missing candles.
  • EMA values depend on the seed and the entered history before the reported point.
  • A price above or below an average is not classified as a buy, sell or trend signal.
  • The result describes entered prices only and does not forecast future direction.
