How futures profit and loss is calculated
Short price move = entry price − exit price
Tick value per contract = minimum price increment × contract multiplier
Gross P/L = direction-adjusted price move × contract multiplier × whole contracts
Net P/L = gross P/L − total entered costs
CME Group explains futures P/L by converting the contract’s price movement into ticks, multiplying by the monetary value of one tick and then multiplying by the number of contracts. The same identity can be written directly as direction-adjusted price movement multiplied by the contract multiplier and whole contracts. Both paths reconcile when the entered tick and multiplier use the same quotation convention.
The audited example resembles CME’s WTI education arithmetic without claiming a current WTI specification. A long trade moves from 53.60 to 54.00. With a 0.01 tick and 1,000 entered units, the 0.40 price change contains 40 ticks and each tick is USD 10 per contract. Two contracts therefore produce USD 800 gross.
The example subtracts USD 8.50 of entered round-turn cost per contract, or USD 17 across the position, leaving USD 783 net. That net figure includes only the fields entered here. Bid-ask spread, slippage, exchange, clearing, brokerage, platform, data, delivery, financing, tax and other charges remain outside the output unless the user consolidates them into the other-cost field.
A valuation price can support an unrealized scenario, while actual closing fills support a realized review. The arithmetic does not decide whether the price was executable, whether daily settlement already moved cash, or whether the broker statement applies a different contract multiplier or fee basis.

How to interpret the result
The positive example is a reconstruction from entered values, not proof of a real profit or a forecast. Selecting short with the same rising price path reverses gross P/L, while entered costs still reduce the result. Reconcile completed trades to the official purchase-and-sale statement rather than treating this page as an account record.
A careful futures P/L workflow
- Identify the exact futures product, delivery month and transaction type.
- Copy the multiplier, minimum increment and quotation convention from the current exchange specification.
- Choose long or short from the actual position, not from the desired result.
- Use actual entry and exit fills for realized review, or label a hypothetical valuation scenario.
- Enter round-turn cost per contract and any additional same-currency position cost without double-counting.
- Compare the result with the broker statement and investigate any difference before reusing the inputs.
P/L, break-even, margin return and account return are different
These measures can use the same price path but answer different questions. The futures P/L calculation converts direction and prices into money after entered costs. The futures break-even calculation starts with costs and solves the price movement needed to recover them. The return-on-margin calculation divides entered P/L by entered initial margin.

Assumptions and limits
- No live price, settlement, contract database, multiplier, tick, fee schedule, account or order record is connected.
- Futures prices may be zero or negative in the model, but tick, multiplier and contract count must remain positive.
- Only one linear outright position is modeled; options, spreads, inverse contracts and nonlinear payoffs are excluded.
- The calculator does not simulate daily settlement, variation margin, margin calls, liquidation or cash withdrawals.
- Unentered spread, slippage, commissions, exchange, clearing, platform, data, tax and delivery costs remain excluded.
- A planned or unrealized result is not a fill guarantee, expected return, maximum loss, signal or recommendation.
Where to verify futures inputs
Start with the exchange product page, contract specifications and rulebook for the exact symbol and delivery month. Confirm the quotation unit, contract multiplier, outright minimum price increment, settlement method, last-trading and notice dates. A product may use a different tick for a spread, block, settlement or another transaction type, so the relevant convention matters.
Then check the futures commission merchant or introducing broker for the account’s commission basis, exchange and clearing fees, platform or data fees, house initial margin, maintenance margin, intraday concessions and overnight rules. Keep a timestamp because requirements can change. For completed trades, use the official purchase-and-sale statement and cash ledger as the account record.
If the displayed cash currency differs from the contract’s monetary quotation or the account statement, perform a documented currency conversion outside this version. The currency dropdown is a label only. It never retrieves a rate or changes a numeric amount.

- Apply the long or short sign to exit minus entry, multiply by the entered contract multiplier and whole contracts, then subtract entered costs for net P/L.
- For a short position, direction-adjusted movement is entry price minus exit price, so a lower exit produces positive gross P/L.
- Tick size converts price movement into entered ticks and, with the multiplier, derives tick value. Direct price-move P/L and tick-based P/L should reconcile.
- No. It subtracts only round-turn cost per entered contract and the separate position-cost amount. Every unentered charge remains excluded.
