How natural gas profit and loss is calculated

Direction-adjusted natural-gas price change = (exit − entry) × +1 for long or −1 for short
Gross quote-currency P/L = direction-adjusted price change × contract size × lots
Gross account-currency P/L = gross quote P/L × quote-to-account rate
Net entered P/L = gross account P/L − entered total costs

The core arithmetic follows the MetaTrader CFD profit convention: closing price minus opening price, multiplied by contract size and lots, with direction applied. The exact broker contract size is required because NGAS, NATGAS and XNGUSD labels do not define one universal number of contract units per lot.

The entered pip or tick size expresses the gas price movement as smaller increments. It does not independently change gross money because full price difference times contract size and lots already contains the same identity. A USD 0.125 move contains 125 increments when the entered size is USD 0.001.

Net P/L subtracts only the nonnegative account-currency total entered by the user. Spread, commission, financing, expiry, rollover, slippage, conversion and tax can affect a real result. Enter a verified combined amount or interpret zero costs as gross-only arithmetic.

A careful natural-gas profit-calculation workflow

  1. Verify the exact broker-server natural-gas symbol, trade contract size, increment and profit currency.
  2. Confirm whether the product expires, closes automatically, rolls or is offered as an undated cash-style CFD.
  3. Choose long or short and enter confirmed fills or clearly hypothetical prices.
  4. Enter broker-permitted lots instead of transferring a futures contract count or another broker’s lot size.
  5. Enter the scenario conversion rate and complete known account-currency costs.
  6. For an actual trade, reconcile every debit and credit against the broker statement.

Audited worked example

The audited example is a long entered at USD 2.750 and exited at USD 2.875, using 1.00 lot, contract size 100, an entered USD 0.001 increment, USD-to-USD conversion 1 and USD 2 total costs. The favorable USD 0.125 move equals 125 increments. Gross P/L is USD 12.50 and net entered P/L is USD 10.50.

How to interpret it

USD 10.50 describes only the entered price path, contract and costs. It is not expected weekly or monthly income. A reversed long move would be negative, and actual fills, financing, expiry or conversion can make the broker statement differ.

Natural-gas CFDs and natural-gas futures do not share one automatic contract size

NGAS, NATGAS and XNGUSD are broker labels for natural-gas-linked products, not a universal arithmetic specification. A natural-gas CFD is sized in broker lots and an entered contract size. NYMEX Henry Hub Natural Gas futures are exchange contracts with exchange-defined energy units and ticks. Related underlying prices do not make the trading units interchangeable.
