How bullion melt value is calculated

Gross troy ounces = weight per item × item count × unit conversion
Fine troy ounces = gross troy ounces × fineness %
Entered melt value = fine troy ounces × entered spot price per troy ounce

Physical-bullion arithmetic starts with mass, not with a product’s retail price. Weight in grams or kilograms is divided by exactly 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce. Weight already expressed in troy ounces needs no conversion. The item count then scales one product into the total gross quantity.

Fineness states how much of that gross weight is the named precious metal. A ten-troy-ounce silver bar marked 99.9% contains 9.99 fine troy ounces under the entered assumption. The model accepts a percentage greater than zero and no more than 100; it does not authenticate the hallmark or assay the item.

The final multiplication uses the spot price per troy ounce you enter. That makes the output reproducible, but not live. A dealer may pay below spot, charge fees or reject an item, while a collectible product can trade for reasons not captured by fine-metal content.

A careful physical-bullion melt-value workflow

Record the evidence behind every input before comparing the calculated fine-metal reference with a product price or dealer bid.

  1. Identify the metal and confirm whether the product label states gross weight, fine weight or both.
  2. Select troy ounces, grams or kilograms. Do not use an ordinary avoirdupois ounce as though it were a troy ounce.
  3. Enter fineness as a percentage: for example, 99.9 for 0.999 fine or 91.67 for approximately 22-karat gold.
  4. Record the source, currency and observation time of the spot reference entered; the calculator does not do this automatically.
  5. Keep appraisal value, numismatic premium and dealer buy-back terms outside the melt-value calculation.
  6. Recalculate after changing any product, price source, unit or fineness assumption.

How to interpret the result

USD 299.70 is the fine-silver reference produced by the fixture. It is not the item’s retail price or cash bid. Before relying on it, verify the item count, whether the marked weight is gross or fine, the fineness, the troy-ounce convention and the date and currency of the entered price.

Melt value, premium and break-even answer different questions

These calculators share one deterministic bullion-cost engine, but their denominators and decisions are different. Melt value starts from gross weight and fineness. Premium starts from known fine ounces and compares acquisition price with entered metal value. Break-even carries fine ounces and every entered round-trip cost into a future spot-reference equation.

Where to verify the inputs

Check the product’s specification or certificate for metal, gross weight, fine weight and fineness. Distinguish troy ounces from ordinary ounces and verify whether a quoted “one-ounce” product means one gross or one fine troy ounce. When in doubt, obtain an independent assay or professional appraisal rather than inferring authenticity from a listing.

For price comparisons, record source, observation time, currency, product, quantity and payment method. Dealer product prices and buy-back terms can move independently of a spot reference. Ask whether shipping, insurance, card surcharge, tax, storage, assay, refining or selling charges are included, and enter each cost only once.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission advises physical-metals buyers to compare weight and price with spot and to account for dealer spreads and additional charges. It also notes that dealers normally sell above spot and buy below spot. Those are reasons to keep the product price, entered spot reference, separate costs and buy-back discount visible instead of compressing them into a single unexplained percentage.
