Index CFD Point Value Calculator
Calculate the value of one full index point, one broker tick and an entered price movement for a user-entered index CFD position. No universal US30, NAS100 or SPX500 contract size is assumed.
Enter the exact index CFD specification
Copy contract size, minimum tick and permitted volume from the exact symbol on your broker server. A similar marketing name can still use different arithmetic.

How index CFD point value is calculated
One-tick value per lot = tick size × contract size per lot
Position point value = contract size × lots × quote-to-account rate
Entered movement value = price movement in points × position point value
MetaTrader exposes contract size, tick size and volume rules as symbol properties. Those properties belong to the exact broker-server symbol; they are not guaranteed by a familiar label such as US30, Wall Street, NAS100 or Germany 40. The calculator therefore requires the specification as an input rather than publishing a supposedly universal preset.
This page defines one index point as one full price unit. A platform may also display a smaller quote point or tick. For example, if the minimum tick is 0.1, a ten-point movement contains 100 ticks. Keeping full index points and broker ticks separate prevents a ten-times error in the movement count.
Contract size converts price movement into quote-currency money. Currency conversion is a second, explicit step. Enter the number of account-currency units equal to one quote-currency unit; use 1 only when the quote and account currencies are the same or when that equality is an intentional scenario assumption.
A careful index CFD point-value workflow
- Open the exact symbol specification inside the same broker server and account type that will be used.
- Record the trade contract size, tick size, minimum volume, volume step and calculation mode.
- Treat one full index price unit as one point on this page; record smaller broker increments as tick size.
- Enter the intended lots and a scenario movement without implying that the movement will occur.
- Enter an independently sourced quote-to-account conversion rate when the currencies differ.
- Compare the calculated one-tick value with the platform order preview or broker documentation before relying on it.
Audited worked example
The audited example uses 0.50 lots, an entered contract size of 1 quote-currency unit per index point per lot, a 0.10 tick and a 25-point movement. One point is worth USD 0.50 for the position, one tick is worth USD 0.05 and 25 points equal 250 ticks. The entered movement value is USD 12.50.
How to interpret it
USD 12.50 is the deterministic value of that entered movement under those exact assumptions. It is not a broker quote, likely profit, risk limit or proof that 0.50 lots are permitted. Replace every field with the current specification for the intended symbol.
Index CFDs, forex pairs and exchange futures do not share one sizing unit
An index CFD is an over-the-counter broker product sized in the broker’s lots and contract multiplier. A forex pair is normally discussed through base-currency contract units and pips. An index futures contract is an exchange-standardized whole contract with an exchange tick value. The underlying market can be related while the trade arithmetic remains different.
| Product | Trading unit | Price-move unit | Specification owner | Correct tool family |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Index CFD | Broker lots | Full index points plus broker ticks | Broker server symbol | These index CFD tools |
| Forex pair | Lots / base-currency units | Pips and pipettes | Broker symbol and FX convention | Forex pip and lot tools |
| Index futures | Whole exchange contracts | Exchange ticks | Exchange contract specification | Futures tools |
Do not transfer an exchange futures multiplier, forex pip value or another broker’s US30 lot convention into an index CFD calculation. The exact server symbol is the governing evidence.
Assumptions and limits
- No current index price, broker quote, symbol specification or conversion rate is retrieved.
- The page does not identify whether a broker calls its size field contract size, multiplier or value per point.
- Spread, commission, financing, dividend adjustments, slippage and tax are not included.
- Margin, liquidation, stop execution and order eligibility are outside the point-value model.
- A symbol suffix, account entity or platform server can change the applicable specification.
- The result is educational entered arithmetic, not an order instruction, forecast or financial advice.
Where to verify index CFD inputs
In MetaTrader, inspect the exact symbol’s specification rather than relying on its short display name. Confirm trade contract size, tick size, tick value, minimum volume, maximum volume, volume step, profit currency and calculation mode. MetaQuotes documents these as symbol properties, but your broker supplies their values. A suffix or account server can distinguish products that look similar in a watchlist.
Use the order ticket or broker documentation to cross-check point and tick values. For an actual closed trade, use confirmed fills and the account statement, not chart labels. Record spread, commission, overnight financing, dividend or cash adjustments, conversion and slippage separately. A single entered cost field is useful for transparent scenario arithmetic but is not a universal broker-fee engine.
Leveraged CFDs can produce rapid losses. Protection, availability and contract terms depend on jurisdiction, entity and client classification; the calculator does not determine which rules apply to a user.
Frequently asked questions
- Multiply the entered broker contract size per lot by lots. Then multiply by the entered quote-to-account conversion rate when the currencies differ.
- Not necessarily. This page defines one index point as one full price unit. A broker tick can be smaller, so tick value equals point value multiplied by entered tick size.
- Use the trade contract size shown for the exact broker-server symbol. Product names, suffixes, account types and entities can use different values.
- No. Enter account-currency units per one quote-currency unit and timestamp the source yourself. Use one only when the currencies match or that is an intentional scenario.
- MetaTrader symbol specifications are supplied by the broker. A universal preset could silently create the wrong point value for a similarly named product.
- No. This page isolates contract point and tick arithmetic. Trading costs, margin and execution must be checked separately.
- No. It only values an entered hypothetical or observed movement. It does not predict direction, probability, fills or future income.
- No. Minimum, step and maximum volume belong to the exact broker symbol and are handled separately by the position-size calculator.
