How the Keltner Channel is calculated
True range = max(high, previous close) − min(low, previous close)
ATR = A-row simple average of true range
Upper / lower = middle ± multiplier × ATR
Version 1.0.0 matches this site’s Observed ATR Calculator by using a rolling arithmetic mean of true range. The first reportable channel is zero-based index A.
The EMA is calculated from the first entered close with alpha 2 ÷ (E + 1). A platform using Wilder ATR, a different seed or a longer history boundary can differ.
Assumptions and limits
- EMA and ATR periods must be integers from 2 to 200 and the multiplier must be positive.
- At least ATR period plus one ordered HLC bars are required.
- Rows must use one symbol, timeframe and broker feed.
- Platform values can differ when ATR smoothing, EMA seed, history boundary or applied price differs.
- Trend, slope, volatility regime, boundary touch, breakout, support, resistance and trading interpretations are withheld.

This profile combines a first-close-seeded EMA with a simple average of true range. A platform using Wilder ATR or another seed can differ. Band position and width do not establish a breakout, reversal or volatility forecast.
