How free margin and margin level are calculated

Free margin = Equity − Used margin
Margin level (%) = Equity ÷ Used margin × 100
Margin utilization (%) = Used margin ÷ Equity × 100

MetaTrader 5 defines free margin as equity minus margin and margin level as equity divided by margin, expressed as a percentage.

When used margin is zero, margin level is shown as not applicable rather than presenting an artificial infinite percentage.

Worked example from the audited fixture

With entered equity of $10,000 and used margin of $2,000, free margin is $8,000, margin level is 500%, and margin utilization is 20%. Adding a planned $500 of margin while holding equity fixed raises used margin to $2,500, reduces free margin to $7,500, changes margin level to 400%, and raises utilization to 25%.

How to interpret the result

The after-plan figures isolate the effect of the extra entered margin. They are not a prediction of the account after an order: equity, required margin, floating profit or loss, charges and the broker calculation can all change at execution.

Assumptions and limits

  • The page does not connect to MetaTrader or retrieve live broker account fields.
  • Equity and used margin must come from the same account, currency and moment.
  • Broker settings can determine how floating profit, floating loss, commission and blocked funds affect equity or free margin.
  • Planned margin is not calculated from a symbol; use the separate margin calculator for an isolated position estimate.
  • No displayed percentage is described as safe, suitable or recommended.

Frequently asked questions

  • Free margin is entered equity minus entered used margin. MetaTrader documents the same account-level relationship.
  • Margin level is equity divided by used margin, multiplied by 100.
  • Margin level is shown as not applicable because division by zero has no finite percentage result.
  • It is used margin divided by equity, multiplied by 100. It is a descriptive inverse view, not a safety rating.
  • It is added to current used margin while equity is held fixed, producing a transparent after-plan scenario.
  • No. Equity, used margin and planned margin are entered manually in the browser.
  • Broker settings can determine how floating profit, floating loss, commission or blocked amounts affect account fields.
  • No. The page provides arithmetic only and does not label any percentage safe, suitable or recommended.
