How the Alligator lines are calculated and aligned
First SMMA(N) = SMA of the first N median prices
SMMA[i] = [SMMA[i−1] × (N−1) + Median[i]] ÷ N
Jaw = SMMA(13) shifted +8 · Teeth = SMMA(8) shifted +5 · Lips = SMMA(5) shifted +3
Version 1.0.0 follows the MetaTrader SMMA seed and recurrence. The three raw sequences are calculated independently from the same entered median-price bars.
At display index d, Jaw comes from raw index d−8, Teeth from d−5 and Lips from d−3. The answer uses the latest display column backed by all three entered sequences, rather than comparing unaligned raw indices.
Assumptions and limits
- At least 18 ordered high-low bars are required for one fully aligned standard display column.
- Rows must be oldest to newest and use one symbol, timeframe and feed.
- The standard periods and shifts are fixed at 13/8, 8/5 and 5/3.
- Available history and the chosen starting row can make seeded SMMAs differ from a terminal with deeper history.
- No line order, crossing, sleeping, waking, trend, entry or exit classification is generated.

How to interpret the result
These three numbers belong to one aligned display column even though they come from different source rows. Comparing the latest raw values instead would ignore the fixed 8, 5 and 3 shifts. Their ordering is reported without assigning a trend or trade state.
Frequently asked questions
- Enter at least 18 ordered high-low bars from one symbol, timeframe and broker feed.
- Each entered high and low are added and divided by two.
- The first value is the simple average of the first N median prices, followed by the published smoothed recurrence.
- Jaw uses period 13 and shift 8, Teeth period 8 and shift 5, and Lips period 5 and shift 3.
- At one display column the three shifted lines come from different calculation rows, so comparing the same raw index would ignore the published shifts.
- No. A shift changes where a value is drawn on the chart; it does not use or forecast a future market price.
- Not necessarily. Feed history, the entered starting point, symbol and timeframe can change the seeded SMMA buffers.
- No. The page does not classify sleeping, waking, trend, crossings, entries or exits.
