Answer first

How an index CFD dividend adjustment is calculated

Points mode gross amount = entered dividend points × contract size × lots × conversion
Money mode gross amount = entered account-money amount per lot × lots
Applied amount = gross amount × entered percentage × +1 long or −1 short

Every value is entered manually. Verify the exact broker-server symbol, account, direction, unit and schedule before relying on the arithmetic.

Enter one dividend-adjustment event

Use the broker-published adjustment for the exact index CFD and event. The page does not estimate constituent dividends or determine tax treatment.

Entered

0% to 100%; not a tax determination.

Verify the exact server symbol; no universal index multiplier is assumed.

Account-currency units per 1 quote-currency unit; no live FX rate is fetched.

Deterministic browser arithmetic only. No broker, exchange, account, price feed, financing schedule, liquidation engine, rollover calendar or order ticket is connected.

Verification boundary: Contract, calculation mode, rate unit, sign, schedule, margin tier, mark-price rule and adjustment treatment belong to the exact product. Replace every example with verified inputs.

How an index CFD dividend adjustment is calculated

Points mode gross amount = entered dividend points × contract size × lots × conversion
Money mode gross amount = entered account-money amount per lot × lots
Applied amount = gross amount × entered percentage × +1 long or −1 short

An index can fall mechanically when constituents go ex-dividend. Brokers may apply a cash adjustment to open index CFD positions so that long and short holders reflect that economic effect. OANDA illustrates index dividend points multiplied by units, with a long credit and short debit after account-currency conversion.

This page accepts either index points or an amount already expressed as account currency per lot. In points mode, the broker contract size converts one index point into money for the entered lots. No universal US30, NAS100 or SPX500 multiplier is assumed.

The applied percentage is explicit because broker deductions, handling, withholding or product terms can differ. It is a scenario input only: the calculator does not classify tax, estimate entitlement or claim that a particular percentage applies to the user.

A careful dividend-adjustment workflow

  1. Confirm that the exact cash index CFD is subject to an adjustment for the relevant event and holding cutoff.
  2. Copy the broker-published long and short amount, unit and currency rather than estimating constituent dividends.
  3. Choose points mode or account-money-per-lot mode and enter the exact broker contract size when needed.
  4. Enter the applicable percentage only from documented terms; use 100% only as a deliberate scenario.
  5. Keep the adjustment separate from market P/L, overnight financing, spread, commission and tax reporting.
  6. For a completed event, reconcile the result with transaction history or the broker statement.

Audited worked example

The audited example uses a long 2-lot position, contract size 1, an entered 4.2-index-point adjustment, USD-to-USD conversion 1 and an applied percentage of 85%. The gross amount is USD 8.40 and the direction-aware applied adjustment is a +USD 7.14 credit.

How to interpret it

+USD 7.14 is the result of the entered example, not a live dividend, guaranteed credit or tax statement. A short position reverses the sign in this model, and the broker’s published long and short treatment remains authoritative.

Margin, financing and dividend adjustments answer different questions

Margin is broker-reserved account collateral under an entered calculation convention. Overnight financing is a broker-defined debit or credit associated with carrying a position across a rollover boundary. A dividend adjustment is a separate cash response to the economic impact of constituent distributions on an index CFD. None of those amounts is price profit, maximum loss or cash ownership of the underlying shares.

Keep the three records separate until each uses the exact same broker symbol, account currency and observation basis. Only then should verified account-currency debits and credits be combined in a broader trade-cost review.

Assumptions and limits

  • No ex-dividend calendar, constituent data, live index value or broker event amount is retrieved.
  • The calculator does not decide whether a position qualifies at a broker cutoff.
  • Applied percentage is user-entered and is not a tax, withholding or legal determination.
  • Long credit and short debit are the modeled convention; exact broker terms can differ.
  • Futures-based or expiring index products may use different carry and adjustment treatment.
  • The output is educational arithmetic, not a dividend entitlement, account statement or financial advice.

Where to verify index CFD account-economics inputs

Open the specification for the exact symbol on the same broker server and account type. Record calculation mode, trade contract size, tick size and value, quote or profit currency, initial margin, margin rate, swap mode, signed long and short swap values, daily rollover multipliers and any product expiration. MetaQuotes documents the available properties; the broker supplies their current values.

Then check the broker’s product schedule and order ticket. Some cash index CFDs receive overnight financing and dividend adjustments, while an expiring or futures-derived index product can use a different cost structure. Similar display names do not prove that two contracts have the same multiplier, unit, cutoff or adjustment treatment.

For a completed trade, the broker statement is authoritative for account activity. Reconcile each debit or credit using confirmed position size, rate unit, event time and conversion. The calculator is designed to expose assumptions and support that reconciliation; it cannot replace the contractual product terms or determine tax and legal treatment.

Frequently asked questions

  • Points mode multiplies entered dividend points by broker contract size, lots and conversion. Money mode multiplies an entered account-currency amount per lot by lots.
  • A constituent dividend can reduce the index value mechanically. Brokers commonly credit qualifying long index CFD positions to reflect that effect and debit short positions.
  • No. A CFD holder does not become a shareholder through this calculation. The cash adjustment follows the broker product terms.
  • Use only a documented broker percentage for the exact direction and event. The field is a scenario input, not a tax or withholding determination.
  • No. The page expects a broker-published aggregate adjustment and does not retrieve index weights, constituent data or an ex-dividend calendar.
  • No. Confirm the eligible position time, ex-date, server time and product terms with the broker.
  • Yes. Broker handling, deductions, percentages and other terms can differ. Calculate the documented direction separately.
  • Not in the separate price-movement calculator. Keep price P/L, financing and dividend adjustments distinct until complete account-currency records are available.
