Observed MACD Calculator

Calculate fast-minus-slow EMA values, a simple signal average and a MACD-minus-signal histogram from ordered prices you enter. The page discloses its first-price EMA seeds, warm-up and signal-line convention. It does not fetch candles or classify crossovers, zero-line position, divergence, momentum or trade direction.

Entered

One row per line: price alone, or optional label then price. Commas, semicolons or tabs are accepted.

MACD boundary: The page exposes fast EMA, slow EMA, MACD, signal and histogram arithmetic without classifying crossovers, zero-line state or divergence.

How the entered MACD is calculated

EMA alpha = 2 ÷ (Period + 1)
MACD = Fast EMA − Slow EMA
Signal = SMA of reported MACD values
Histogram / OsMA = MACD − Signal

Fast and slow EMA series start from the first entered price. MACD values before the slow period completes are treated as warm-up.

The signal line follows the MetaTrader 5 Help simple-moving-average convention. Platform history and seed choices can still produce different chart values.

Worked example from the audited fixture

Reproduce it with “Load audited example”With fast period 3, slow period 5, signal period 3 and entered prices 1 through 7, the audited example reports a current fast EMA of 6.015625 and slow EMA of 5.175583. Their difference gives a current MACD of 0.840042. The three-point simple signal average is 0.758452, so the histogram is 0.081590.

How to interpret the result

The positive MACD and histogram describe only the relationship among the entered prices and declared averages. They do not prove upward momentum will persist or create a crossover signal. A platform using a different EMA seed, signal method, applied price or history window can produce different early values.

Assumptions and limits

  • The fast period must be shorter than the slow period.
  • All prices must use one symbol, timeframe, broker feed and applied-price basis.
  • Labels are descriptive; the page does not sort rows or infer missing candles.
  • A positive or negative histogram is not classified as a buy, sell or momentum signal.
  • The result contains no crossover, zero-line, divergence, trend or forecast label.

Frequently asked questions

  • It is the fast exponential moving average minus the slow exponential moving average of the entered prices.
  • Version 1.0.0 starts both EMA recurrences from the first entered price and treats early slow-period values as warm-up.
  • It is the simple moving average of the reportable MACD values, following the convention documented in MetaTrader 5 Help.
  • The page subtracts the current signal value from the current MACD value.
  • The minimum number of ordered positive prices equals the slow period plus the signal period minus one.
  • The tool defines fast as the shorter-period EMA and rejects equal or reversed period settings.
  • Not necessarily. Platforms can use different history, seeds, applied prices or signal-line conventions.
  • No. The page reports arithmetic only and does not classify crossovers, zero-line state, divergence or trade direction.
