Observed RSI Calculator

Calculate a transparently seeded Relative Strength Index from ordered prices you enter. The calculator reports the current RSI, average gain, average loss and each reportable point using a disclosed Wilder-style recurrence. It does not fetch market data or label thresholds, divergence, trend direction or trade signals.

Entered

RSI boundary: The page reports entered-price arithmetic only. It does not classify 30, 50 or 70, divergence, failure swings or trade direction.

How the entered RSI is calculated

Change = Current price − Previous price
RSI = 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + Average gain ÷ Average loss)
Later averages = [(Prior average × (N − 1)) + Current gain or loss] ÷ N

The first average gain and loss are arithmetic means of the first N adjacent price changes. Every later value uses the disclosed Wilder-style recurrence.

Flat initial data reports 50, gain-only data reports 100 and loss-only data reports 0. Seed and available-history conventions can differ across software.

Worked example from the audited fixture

Reproduce it with “Load audited example”With period 3 and entered prices 100, 102, 101, 104, 103 and 105, the audited example reports an initial RSI of 83.3333 and a current RSI of 79.1667. The current average gain is 1.407407 and the current average loss is 0.370370; 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + 1.407407 ÷ 0.370370) = 79.1667.

How to interpret the result

The 79.1667 result is the last arithmetic value for this entered series under model 1.0.0. It does not establish an overbought condition, reversal probability, trend continuation or next-bar direction. A platform using different startup history, applied prices or seed conventions can show a different value.

Assumptions and limits

  • All prices must use one symbol, timeframe, broker feed and applied-price basis.
  • Labels are descriptive; the page does not parse dates, sort rows or repair missing candles.
  • The arithmetic seed and recurrence are explicit and are not claimed to match every MetaTrader buffer.
  • No overbought, oversold, divergence, crossover or trend condition is inferred.
  • The result describes entered prices only and does not forecast the next observation.

Frequently asked questions

  • Enter at least the selected period plus one positive ordered price from one consistent symbol, timeframe, source and applied-price basis.
  • Each is the arithmetic mean of the gain or loss components from the first N adjacent price changes.
  • Each later value multiplies the prior average by N minus 1, adds the current gain or loss, and divides by N.
  • When both average gain and average loss are zero, this disclosed model reports RSI 50.
  • A positive average gain with zero average loss reports 100; zero average gain with positive average loss reports 0.
  • Not necessarily. Available history, applied price, seed and implementation conventions can change indicator values.
  • No. The page does not classify thresholds, divergence, failure swings, entries or exits.
  • No. It processes only the ordered observations entered in the browser and does not sort or repair them.
