Entered

One row per line. Commas, semicolons or tabs are accepted. Volume may be zero but cannot be negative.

Volume boundary: For spot forex, MetaTrader volume commonly means tick count rather than centralized traded volume. Do not mix tick and real volume in one sequence.

How On-Balance Volume is calculated

First OBV = first entered volume
Higher close: OBV = prior OBV + current volume
Lower close: OBV = prior OBV − current volume
Equal close: OBV = prior OBV

Version 1.0.0 follows the published MetaQuotes source and seeds the first value with the first entered volume. Later rows add, subtract or retain the current volume according to the close-to-close comparison.

The absolute level depends on the seed and available history. This page reports entered arithmetic only and does not label trend, breakout, confirmation or divergence.

Assumptions and limits

  • Rows must be oldest to newest and use one symbol, timeframe, broker feed and volume type.
  • Spot-forex tick volume counts price changes and is not centralized exchange turnover.
  • Labels are descriptive; the page does not sort dates, fetch candles or fill missing observations.
  • The first-volume seed and entered history affect the absolute OBV level.
  • A rising or falling sequence is not classified as a trade, trend or confirmation signal.

Worked example from the audited fixture

Reproduce it with “Load audited example”The seven-row fixture seeds OBV with first volume 100. Later close comparisons add 120 and 150, subtract 130, add 160 and 180, then subtract the final volume 140 because the last close is lower. Current OBV is 440.

How to interpret the result

OBV 440 is the cumulative result of this exact entered path and seed. Its absolute level changes when earlier history or the feed’s volume units change. The latest subtraction does not establish distribution, divergence or future direction.

Frequently asked questions

  • Version 1.0.0 follows the published MetaQuotes source and uses the first entered volume as the first OBV value.
  • The current entered volume is added to the prior OBV value.
  • The current entered volume is subtracted from the prior OBV value.
  • The prior OBV value is carried forward unchanged.
  • MetaTrader commonly supplies tick volume, which counts price changes rather than centralized executed volume.
  • Not necessarily. The feed, volume type, available history and seed starting point can change the absolute sequence.
  • No. The page reports the entered recurrence without trend, breakout, confirmation, divergence, entry or exit labels.
