Forex Trading Software: MT4, MT5, TradingView and cTrader

Choose software for your account, device and trading tools. Compare documented features and limits, then complete a demo workflow before committing funds.

Top Forex Trading Software

Choose forex trading software around the job you need to complete. MT4 is a practical candidate when your indicators or Expert Advisors require MQL4. MT5 adds a different programming environment and broader testing tools. TradingView suits chart analysis with a supported broker connection, while cTrader offers its own trading and automation workflow. The right choice depends on your account, device and tools.

This comparison uses official product documentation checked on 9 September 2026. The fit judgments are editorial assessments of those features, not results from a live-account execution test. A platform can help you enter and manage an order; it does not determine whether a broker is suitable for you or whether a strategy will make money.

Compare the software by the task it supports

Start with a short list of requirements: the account you can use, the instruments you need, your existing indicators, and whether you will trade manually or run automation. Then compare these candidates against that list.

SoftwareConsider it whenUseful capabilityCheck before choosing
MetaTrader 4Your existing tools require MT4/MQL4.Charts, custom indicators, Expert Advisors and an EA Strategy Tester.Your broker offers the intended MT4 account and your tools work in the application you will use.
MetaTrader 5You need MQL5 tools or multi-symbol strategy testing.Multi-asset platform design, a multi-threaded tester and netting or hedging account support. The actual account’s markets, position-accounting system and tool compatibility.
TradingViewYou want a charting workspace, alerts and simulated practice, with trading through a supported connection.Supercharts, Pine Script tools and Paper Trading.Broker integration, supported account features, data feed and subscription limits.
cTraderYou want to evaluate cTrader’s chart/order workflow or cBots.Desktop, web and mobile applications, with local and cloud automation options.Your broker/account route and which features run locally or in the cloud.

These are different reasons to shortlist a platform, not a ranking of broker safety or trading returns. The sections below explain the feature limits that matter when making the choice.

MetaTrader 4: a candidate for existing MQL4 tools

MT4 combines forex charting and order management with a dedicated environment for custom indicators and Expert Advisors. MetaQuotes documents MQL4 development through MetaEditor and testing through the platform’s Strategy Tester. An indicator supplies analysis; an Expert Advisor can submit trading instructions according to its code. See the official MT4 automation guide.

Where it fits: you already have an MT4 indicator, template or EA that you intend to use. Keeping the intended platform can reduce the work of rebuilding that setup. Confirm the tool’s supported version and settings first, rather than choosing software solely because a familiar indicator name appears in a download list.

Its limitation: a tool’s availability says nothing about the quality of its trading logic. The MT4 tester uses historical quotes and simulated transactions; a favourable report does not establish future profitability or reproduce every live execution condition.

Also check the device. MetaQuotes supplies separate mobile applications with account, chart and trading functions. Do not infer that a desktop custom-tool workflow transfers unchanged to your phone. For an XM account, our XM MT4 setup guide explains the broker, server and account checks.

MetaTrader 5: check the account model as well as the features

MetaTrader 5 provides charts, an economic calendar and the MQL5 environment for custom trading applications. Its platform design covers forex and exchange markets, but the instruments actually available depend on the brokerage account. A platform feature list is not a list of products you can necessarily trade. See MetaQuotes’ MT5 product documentation.

Where it fits: you need a tool developed for MT5 or want to examine a strategy that uses several symbols. The MT5 Strategy Tester supports multi-symbol testing and parallel optimization. That can help investigate how a strategy behaves across its inputs; it does not make an optimized strategy reliable by itself.

Its limitation: you must understand how the account records positions. MT5 supports netting and hedging, and the broker sets the system for the account. An opposite order can therefore have a different effect from the one you expect. Check the account model before rehearsing a trade.

Use the version of each indicator or EA intended for MT5. Do not assume that a similar name or chart appearance means an MT4 tool is compatible. Our XM MT5 connection and order guide takes the platform choice through to a demo exercise.

TradingView: charting and broker connection are separate checks

TradingView brings charts, drawing tools, indicators and watchlists into a shared analysis workspace. It can also connect to supported brokers for order placement. The official broker-connection guide starts with its integrated-broker list, then connects the selected account from the chart.

Where it fits: you want to organize chart analysis and alerts before deciding where to execute. Its Paper Trading simulator provides virtual-fund practice. That is useful for learning the order interface and recording a process without treating the simulator as your live brokerage account.

Its limitation: finding a symbol on a chart does not establish that your connected account can trade it. Check the exact broker integration and account features. If you analyze with one data source and execute through another, verify the symbol, quote source and order screen before acting.

TradingView’s current plan comparison separates chart, indicator and alert allowances. It also explains separately added exchange data. Choose a plan for the features and data you actually need; a larger subscription does not improve the underlying trading idea.

cTrader: evaluate the trading screen and the automation location

cTrader offers Windows, Mac, web and mobile applications. Its official application page is a useful starting point for checking the current device requirements and download route. Confirm that the brokerage account you intend to use is supported before configuring a workspace.

Where it fits: you want to compare its chart and order-management workflow or use cBots. Current cTrader documentation describes cBots written in C# or Python. Each running instance has its own parameters, so checking the selected account and instance settings matters as much as finding the bot in the application.

Its limitation: local execution and cloud execution are different arrangements. The cloud feature documentation distinguishes cloud cBots from locally running cBots, custom indicators and plugins. Local operation requires the desktop application to stay open; cloud cBots can run independently of that device. Applicable limits and external-package support still need checking.

Before using automation, identify where it runs, how you see its logs and how you stop the intended instance. Stopping a program and closing its existing positions are separate tasks to verify in a demo account.

Match the device to the job

A desktop workspace, a phone app and a browser terminal can share a product name while supporting different tasks. Write down what must work on each device. For example, you might need desktop custom indicators for analysis and a phone for checking existing positions. That is a more useful requirement than simply asking whether the platform “has an app.”

  • For manual trading: check chart readability, the order ticket, volume units, protective-order controls and trade history.
  • For custom indicators: confirm the platform, application version, installation route and any licence or dependency requirements.
  • For automation: establish where the program runs, what happens after disconnection and how to identify duplicate instances.
  • For switching devices: verify which account and workspace are open, and which settings or drawings carry across.

Resolve a missing capability before paying for add-ons or changing accounts. A screenshot of a tool on somebody else’s desktop is not proof that it will work on your chosen device.

Check the broker separately from the software

The software company and the firm providing your trading account perform different roles. MetaQuotes identifies itself as a software developer and states that it does not provide brokerage or investment services. A familiar terminal therefore does not settle which company holds your account, which regulator covers it or what happens during a withdrawal dispute.

Likewise, the platform name does not set a universal deposit minimum, spread, commission, leverage limit or instrument count. Check the provider, account and symbol. Optional analytics, managed-account services and copy products need their own current terms; do not assume they are included because a broker offers a particular terminal.

If XM is on your shortlist, use our XM company, cost and suitability review, then the registration and verification guide for the opening task. Review XM bonus credit and withdrawal conditions separately from the software decision. Country-specific terms still govern.

Compare software costs and trading costs on separate lines

A free download is not the total cost of using a trading setup. List the charges that apply to your actual arrangement, leaving an item blank until you have checked it.

Cost categoryWhat to verify
Software and dataSubscription tier, paid indicators, data permissions and any separate exchange-data charge.
AutomationEA/cBot licence, hosting, renewal conditions and required services.
TradingSpread, commission, overnight charges and currency conversion for equivalent exposure.
Account and paymentsFunding, withdrawal, currency-conversion or inactivity terms from the actual provider.

For a broker-specific worked method, our XM total-trading-cost guide separates spread, commission and holding charges. Its account examples are not a universal price list for MT4, MT5 or other platforms.

Run a demo comparison you can repeat

Use the same small set of tasks on each shortlisted platform. This proposed exercise is for checking usability and understanding; it is not a test we claim to have completed for these products.

  1. Verify the application and account. Start from the software developer or intended broker’s official route. Confirm that the connected account is a demo before any order exercise.
  2. Find the exact instrument. Read its description and contract information. Do not select a similarly named product solely because its chart looks familiar.
  3. Read the order requirements. Identify volume units, minimum volume, volume step, permitted orders and trading sessions. Note how the platform displays spread and holding charges.
  4. Rehearse an order deliberately. On demo, review the symbol, direction, volume and protective levels before submission. Then inspect the resulting record, practise a modification and confirm how to close it.
  5. Check recovery and automation. Find the history and logs, reconnect to the correct demo account, and verify how to stop any test automation without assuming that its open positions disappear.
  6. Record what failed. A missing symbol, unavailable indicator or confusing volume field is useful comparison evidence. Resolve it before moving the same process to a live account.

In MT5, the Specification command in Market Watch exposes the selected symbol’s contract fields. Read the values from your own intended account. The documentation illustration below teaches where to look; its numbers are not a broker quote or a position-size recommendation.

Official MT5 Symbol Specification example with contract, volume, swap and session fields

For an XM practice account, the demo setup and practice guide covers the connection task. A simulation can reveal interface mistakes; it cannot guarantee live fills, uninterrupted operation or profitable trading.

Choose the setup you can explain

You should be able to name the account provider, identify the exact instrument, explain the order size and locate the controls for changing or closing a position. Choose the platform that meets those requirements and supports your necessary tools. If you cannot complete the demo checklist, solve that problem before adding more indicators or committing funds.

Forex trading software questions

Which forex software should a beginner choose?

Start with a demo platform offered for an account you can appropriately use. Choose between candidates by completing the same chart, specification and order-history tasks. MT4 familiarity, MT5 features or a polished browser chart is less useful than understanding the actual controls and account terms.

Does free forex software mean trading is free?

No. Software access and trading charges are separate. Check subscriptions, optional tools and data alongside the account’s spread, commission, holding and payment costs. A free application does not remove market losses.

Should I move my MT4 tools to MT5?

First check whether the tools have an MT5 version and whether you need the change. MQL4 and MQL5 belong to different platform environments. Verify compatibility and reproduce your demo workflow rather than assuming the same file or settings will work.

Can I place real trades from every TradingView chart?

No. The charting symbol and the connected trading account are separate checks. Use TradingView’s supported-broker route, then verify the account’s available instruments and functions. Paper Trading uses virtual funds and is a different connection.

Does a backtest or a trading bot prove that software is profitable?

No. A platform provides tools; the strategy, data, assumptions and execution conditions affect the result. Inspect simulated orders and losses, not just a headline return, and do not treat historical performance as a forecast.
